I find it quite boring and in portrait mode it is only alphanumeric and I’m not fond of landscape mode as i have to use both the thumbs and i find it difficult to type that way.Have you tried the Opera Mini portrait QWERTY keyboard, I’m used to it and i prefer it over the default 5230 keyboard.
There are few keyboard applications which let you change the default keyboard to much better virtual  keyboards in different layouts for easier and faster typing.
